Letting Go of Tension in the Body to Calm the Nervous System

We often hear about the importance of “letting go”—whether it's letting go of stress, expectations, or even past experiences. But what about letting go of the tension we hold in our bodies? Physical tension can build up from everyday stress, leading to discomfort, stiffness, and even a state of heightened anxiety. That’s why calming practices like Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga are so essential for our well-being, especially as the seasons change and we prepare for the quieter, reflective months ahead.
The Connection Between Physical Tension and the Nervous System
Our bodies and minds are deeply interconnected. When we experience stress, our bodies react by tensing muscles, sometimes without us even noticing. This tension, especially when it becomes chronic, can activate the sympathetic nervous system (the "fight or flight" response), making us feel anxious, overwhelmed, and even physically drained.
That’s where practices like Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga come in. These gentle, slow-paced styles of yoga allow your body to enter a state of deep relaxation, which in turn activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest and digest" response). When this part of the nervous system is engaged, the body can truly relax and heal.
Why Yin Yoga Helps You Let Go
In Yin Yoga, you hold poses for several minutes at a time, allowing your body to relax into deep stretches. This gives your muscles time to release, while also stretching deeper connective tissues, such as ligaments and fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, organs, and nerves.
The longer holds in Yin Yoga help you soften areas of chronic tension, like the hips, lower back, and shoulders, while also calming the mind. When fascia is tight, it can create restrictions in muscle movement and contribute to discomfort and pain. This practice allows you to explore the deeper aspects of your body, facilitating emotional release and a sense of profound relaxation.
Restorative Yoga for Deep Relaxation
Restorative Yoga takes this release even further by using props like bolsters, blankets, and blocks to fully support your body in each pose. The goal is to let go of all physical effort and allow your body to melt into the poses. Restorative Yoga is ideal for calming the nervous system and relieving both mental and physical tension, making it an excellent practice for anyone looking to reduce stress and anxiety.
Reset Your Mind & Body This October
As we move deeper into fall, it's the perfect time to let go of tension, reset your energy, and prepare for the slower, reflective months ahead. Incorporating regular Yin Yoga or Restorative Yoga into your routine can help you release what no longer serves you—whether that’s physical tension or mental stress.
This October, give yourself permission to let go—whether it’s the tension in your body, the stress in your mind, or even emotions you’ve been holding onto. Your body and nervous system will thank you for it.
